Subject: BJP Manifesto And Your Pivotal Role
Lt Gen NS Malik
Dear Sir,
Little bit that I have seen and observed of you, it is my sense and surmise that with your quiet diplomacy and persuasive powers that no doubt must have made you to the job of Deputy Chief of Army Staff prior retirement, you have been able to prevail upon BJPs Political Leadership to take the situation in hand regards wide spread discontent in Defence Services and the retired Pensioners. When Shri Jaswant Singh is said to have made the Statement to the press that he has been associated with Manifesto and the Election Agenda many times before and that he would take up the issues of Defence Forces if the BJP comes to power. He was also very passionate about ECHS which he had swung when holding both RM and FM Chairs concurrently against much opposition and that he would like to see that it bears full fruit. Something that he earlier last year had communicated to me in his DO Letter.
Both of you have sense of History. But I hope in due course when Military History is written dispassionately, your name too would find a worthy place.
It is very disturbing to find some TV Channels and news papers misleading people and the country perhaps influenced in part by their foreign equity holders and in part being beholden to the Leaders in Power. Last night in particular I was witnessing the debate on TV Channel 18-CNN-IBN being moderated by Dilip Sardesai. His wife, Sagrika Ghosh was not the other anchor who if not more, is eqaully rabid-I am sorry for this ungentlemanly expression. He was conveying that BJP has communicated a sin by politicizing the Armed Forces. Then the Congress spoke person, Mrs Natrajan, was asking why BJP did not consult them and others and involved a Consensus.
Mrs. Natrajan did not talk about Consensus when GoMs rejected the formal requests made by the three Services! Did they consult the other Political Parties and the Higher Judiciary to find an amicable way before they decided to start humiliating the Armed Forces and the Veterans. Did YUVRAJ promised to look into when he was called upon by a Delegation. Why not? And when the Defence Forces both serving and retired have been forced to exercise their legitimate franchise why did they not act even then? Even if today the Government comes up with the permission of EC and announce what it is purported to be stated in BJP's manifesto, it would be a wise step. And I would like to think that the Armed Forces and the Veterans then should be asked to go their way with dignity restored.
It is an acknowledged principal of a democracy that murmurs and dis-satisfaction amongst Defence Personnel including the retired, are promptly addressed properly and fairly and in an unbiased manner by Government Political Leaders and harmony, pride and well being restored as quickly as possible. It is another matter that this poor treatment has been going on since Independence and even before Independence. National Congress allowed Indian Armed Forces to fight on the side of Allied Powers. And another Leader took INA to Axis Powers. That is an Historical Fact. Did the Armed Forces say a word either way! They fought on both sides. And they are still silent.
Now Mr Dilip Sardesai, much that I admire his and his Wife rapid fire sessions on TV, they seem to shallow and have a long way to go. Even Mr Karan Thapar being a son of an ex-Army Chief is mellowing down. They seem to have spent lot of time in educating themselves in England and learning History written by the Colonial Masters. Nothing wrong with that. Time was when Leaders educated in UK held sway but the DESIS are in the forefront. Please in the Navy during our time there was a lot of British culture and some of their qulities I admire till today. But one does not forget ones moorings. If they had re-educated themselves at NDA/IMA in Indian History and Indian Military History written by Indian Authors, their thinking process would be in tune and in harmony with both India and Bharart instead of only the former.
And I do hope that the Political Leadership and the Judiciary come to consensus even now and provide as put forward by one political party and restore the Dignity and the well being of Armed Forces both serving and retired. Let it not be left to some winning combination and who could give or become vindictive too. For them at stake is there plus 60 years rule!
With best regards,
Prem Batra

Dear Prem
Blessings.
T U for cc of the-mail to Gen Malik. I admire Adm. Harinder more. No bull about him. Straight to the point. Let us hope something would come out of these efforts. Of course, our friends across the border are doing their best to help us. Only we are cowards!! These netas would not have dared to open their mouth so wide all the time.In these troubled times we have to have only one Gen. To say, NO CAN"t BE DONE. The likes of Anthony and certainly Manmohan Singh come to their Senses.
Lots of love and blessings.
Pran
